Sara Skamser moved to Newport in 1978 after spending a couple of years in the Portland area as a recent immigrant from Wisconsin. She was a trained welder and had gotten hired to weld on fishing vessels with a local company here in Newport. It wasn’t long and she was on the ocean as a deck hand on salmon and crab boats. Sara found steadier work at a local net shop, and opened Foulweather Trawl in 1984 with her husband John.  They build and repair fishing nets for 60 plus vessels from Monterey to Neah Bay and Kodiak and Dutch Harbor Alaska.

Sara has always enjoyed volunteering and getting involved with the community.  She is past president of Yaquina Basin Marine Trades Association, and past President and current board member of Newport Fishermen’s Wives.  Sara also serve on the Lincoln County Historical Society Board and their Building Committee. She also had several fun years as a happy sailor and a member of the Yaquina Bay Yacht club.

In 2017, Sara was voted in to serve a 4 year term as a Port of Newport Commissioner.  She very much enjoys being a part of the team! She was elected as Commission President at the July 23, 2019 Commission Meeting.
